Russian Gold-washed Silver Enamel Presentation Plate, Moscow, 1882, with Imperial warrant mark, with geometric cloisonne enamel rim, engraved with presentation inscription in French to center, "a S. E. illustre general Saussier," dated Moscow 1886, dia. 8 in., approx 14 troy oz. Note: Saussier was a French general, and later Governor of Paris, who played a role in the infamous Dreyfus Affair, a military and social scandal which rocked France in the 1890s and early 1900s. The scandal involved the wrongful conviction of a young Jewish artillery officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, of treason. The true perpetrator of the crimes was a member of an illustrious family, French officer Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy.
