William Preston Phelps (American, 1848-1923) Reflections Signed "W P Phelps" l. r. Oil on canvas, 20 x 14 in. (50.8 x 35.6 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Strip-lined, patch reinforcement, retouch. N.B. William Preston Phelps lived and painted in New England but also traveled extensively, both within the U.S. and abroad. Born in Dublin, New Hampshire, Phelps first worked as a sign painter before traveling to Europe to study art in the 1870s. He studied in Munich from 1875 until 1877 when he returned to the U.S. for a brief period of time. By 1879, Phelps returned to Munich and, along with Frank Duveneck, Walter Shirlaw, David Neal, and William Merritt Chase, founded the Munich Art Club. Phelps finally settled in New Hampshire where he was continually inspired by the landscape and people of his native New England.
