Colt Model 1881 Gatling Gun, Hartford, Connecticut, with ten 31-inch . 45 caliber barrels, the barrel housing engraved Gatling Gun, Patented and Manfd. at Colt's Armory, Hartford, Conn., USA, Model 1881, No. 297, Cal. 45, JEG , inspector's mark DFC appears in numerous locations, one marking with 1879 , the artillery carriage with two ammunition boxes, one with six brass cartridge clips, cleaning rods and leather tool kit with applied tag marked US and numerous tools, overall lg. approximately 8 ft. Note: According to the consignor, this gun was purchased by Bannerman from Watervliet Arsenal sometime before WWI, as the best of a small group of similar guns sold as surplus when the military cartridge was changed from 45-70 to the short-lived 30-40 Krag in 1892. It was purchased as "new-in-the-box, never fired" condition from Navy Arms in 1968. wooden artillery carriage refinished, iron carriage components repainted.
