Four-inch Globe by C. Abel-Klinger, with cartouche De Aarde Volgens die Nieuwste Ontdekkingen Uitage van C. Abel-Klinger te Neurenberg , made up of twelve hand-colored gores and two polar calottes on plaster sphere, with continents outlined in pink, blue, yellow, red, and purple and shaded respectively, oceans pale blue, coastlines hatched, labeled in Dutch, showing major cities, lakes, mountain ranges, graduated Equinoctial, Ecliptic, and Meridian lines, and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, supported on steel axis pins in paper-covered wood horizon ring divided by the compass points, the Zodiacal and Gregorian calendars, in original box with hand-colored label on lid depicting family group with telescope, globes and dividers, titled in German, English, and French, box dia. 5 3/4 in., (globe in overall fine original condition, horizon ring bowed, some edge loss on box lid). Note: Nuremberg engraver and art dealer Johann Georg Klinger produced globes in a variety of forms from 1791 onwards. Under the name C.Abel-Klinger Kunsthandlung, the firm continued its production of smaller educational globes into the 20th century. This example dates from the first half of the 19th century.
