E. Howard & Co. No. 48 Regulator, Boston, c. 1870, the burl walnut case with elaborately carved cresting and gothic pendants flanking the 15 1/4-inch painted-iron astro dial signed E. Howard & Company, Boston, Mass. , three original blued steel hands, bayonet turned bezel, glazed front door and side lites, lower base section with burl walnut moldings and applied carving, eight-day weight-powered movement with Geneva stop, maintaining power, dead-beat escapement with detachable steel pallet faces, jeweled front plate bearings on third, escape wheel and pallet arbor, and the center wheel through the pallet arbor on back plate, powered by a brass-cased weight and pulley, regulated by a two-jar mercury temperature compensating pendulum and steel rod, ht. 110 1/2 in. Case refinished thirty years ago, all carving and finials appear to be original, engraved silvered beat scale with the clock, but pierced wooden holder now gone, dial and signature relined, escape and pallet bearings on back plate now replaced with brass, pendulum and carrier are high quality and of proper age, but of a-typical design, mercury removed from pendulum jars.
