Large Steiff Light-Golden Curly Mohair Center-Seam Teddy Bear, c. 1905, with black shoe button eyes, vertically-stitched ginger nose, mouth and claws, center-seam head, excelsior stuffing, stout rounded body, long curved arms, plump legs and large feet, and yellow felt pads, ht. 27 in., (missing button, stuffing settled, moth damage on muzzle and pads, some overall fur loss, damage at ankles, right-arm joint and cheek under the right eye), ht. 27 in. Provenance: From the Providence home of the original owners, the three Coleman sisters. Worn. Scattered fur loss from moth damage, fur sparse on muzzle, hole right side of muzzle. Ears need re-stitching to head. Ankles are loose (re-attached) and the damaged area extremely fragile, fabric damage right shoulder joint, pads original, discoloration from underlying red felt on foot pads, a hole in each and five holes in right paw pad. Stuffing settled.
