Condition: Retouch, losses (retouched), craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gerrit Beneker first traveled to Massachusetts in 1912 to study with Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown. Over the following years, Beneker enjoyed a successful career which took him throughout the country; he worked as an illustrator in New York, produced a series of posters for the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., and was an artist-in-residence at the Hydraulic Pressed Steel Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. Beneker, however, was always attracted to the coastline of Massachusetts¹ Cape. He returned for summers, and in 1920 purchased a home in Truro. He was also a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association.
