Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: The estate of Sir Edwin A.G. Manton. N.B. The work has been included in the General Archive of Works by Michele Cascella, compiled by Galleria Torcular, Milano. N.B. Cascella was born in the Italian coastal town of Ortona, on the Adriatic Sea, in the province of Chieti. Cascella began his career in art by apprenticing under his artist-father Basilio at his chromolithography studio. He honed his craft by copying the works of Italian Renaissance masters such as Da Vinci, Pisanello, and Boticelli. (1) Cascella began exhibiting in 1907, and participated regularly in the Venice Biennial exhibitions between 1924 and 1942. While he painted a variety of subjects from still lifes to landscapes, he is best known for his scenes of Portofino.
