Arthur Clifton Goodwin (American, 1864-1929) City in Winter, Probably a View of the Third Avenue El, New York Signed "AC Goodwin" l. l., inscribed "57th St., New York, 1924" on the reverse, identified on labels affixed to the backing. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered retouch, scattered craquelure, surface abrasions. N.B. A self-taught artist, A.C. Goodwin painted Impressionist cityscapes. He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and spent the majority of his career working in Boston. In the 1920s, however, Goodwin moved to New York and set up a studio in Washington Square. Goodwin did not adhere to any one school of painting; he incorporated elements of the Ashcan School into his unique Impressionist style, using color and light and to capture the vibrancy of the city streets. Retouch is a few scattered very small areas (including u.l. in sky, u.c. edge, and l.r.). Mild craquelure stable throughout. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
