Chippendale Cherry Tall Clock, Squire Millerd, Warwick, Rhode Island, c. 1790, the domed top with turned and carved finials, fluted free-standing columns flanking the arched and glazed hood door, the waist with block and carved shell door, raised base panel, ogee feet, 12-in. engraved brass dial with Roman numerals, second's bit, recessed calendar, signed in the arch Squire Millerd, Warwick with red wax in the engraved decoration, eight-day time and strike movement with wooden pendulum rod, brass faced bob and two iron weights, refinished, (imperfections), ht. 83 in. Note: Squire Millerd (1750-1820) was appointed Captain in the Providence Battalion in 1780 and Captain in the Second Warwick Company in 1781. He is buried in a private graveyard at the back of the Millerd homestead in Cowesett, Rhode Island. Case refinished, feet and blocking are original, all secondary wood is chestnut, finials possibly replaced, all mechanical components including hands, weights and pendulum are original, red wax in the engraving on the dial is original and seen rarely on sheet brass engraved dials by Connecticut makers of the same period.
