Pair of Paktong Candlesticks, England, mid-18th century, the candlesticks with knopped stems and octagonal bases, (one with minor crack), ht. 6 1/4 in. One with a crack on shaft just below the candlecup. Paktong (literally "white copper") is a metal alloy of copper with nickel and often but not always zinc, first known in China, and was known in the west from imported wares and was used to imitate sterling silver.
