Chippendale Pine Tall Clock, by Simeon Reed, Barre, Massachusetts, c. 1780, closed bonnet hood with dentil molding, flat reeded columns flanking the 11 in. brass dial with engraved center, applied pewter chapter ring signed Simeon Reed Barre, day of the month numerals, second's bit and figure in the arch, the eyes moving with the swing of the pendulum, cast brass spandrels, three hands off the center, applied reeded columns flanking the waist door all on bracket feet, eight-day brass time, strike, calendar and animated movement, wooden pendulum rod and two iron weights, refinished, (minor imperfections), ht. 75 in. Provenance: Major Moses Greenwood, Hubbardston, Massachusetts, died March 8, 1827, aged 75 years. An early handwritten family history is pasted on the backboard. Reed is listed in Spittler and Bailey, American Clockmakers and Watchmakers, Vol. 3 , page 248 as working in Cummington, Massachusetts, c. 1770 and father of Zelotus. No other clocks are reported by this maker in Barre. Refinished, probably was painted originally, base is original, hood never had a dial door or glass, glass now added over dial, no significant repairs or replacements on movement, but does need a cleaning.
