Anglo-American School, 19th century Portrait Miniature of Benjamin Bickley Rogers. Unsigned, sitter identified in inscriptions on reverse and affixed label "Benj. Bickley younger brother of my Mother C.E. Rogers, [signed] B.B. Rogers" and "Born 1828 England Died 1919 translator/author." Watercolor on ivory, c. 1835, oval bust length portrait depicting a blond-haired boy wearing a blue jacket with brass buttons, 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 in., housed in an oval hinged brass locket case. Condition: Paint smudge u.l. Note: Benjamin Bickley Rogers (1828-1919), was a lawyer in England but because of increasing deafness he retired from his legal practice and devoted himself to literature, translating all the plays of Aristophanes, and reproducing the Greek metres in the English version. Smudged area about 3/8 x 1/4 in.
