Paint-decorated Pine Chest, central Massachusetts, 18th century, the lift top on pintel hinges above a single arch-molded facade with freehand designs in black on a red wash centering the initials "HL," original surface, (height loss and minor imperfections), ht. 24 1/2, wd. 35 1/2, dp. 22 1/2 in. Provenance: Interior with handwritten note reading: "this chest was evidently made for Hannah Locke, who married Nehemiah Stone December 1, 1748. He was my great-grandfather. The chest was undoubtedly a part of her wedding outfit and is now more than 150 yrs old. November 3, 1902." Genealogical records indicate Nehemiah Stone was born on October 24, 1724 in Framingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel (1690-1726), and Hannah (Searle) Stone (1687-1724). Nehemiah married Hannah Locke on December 1, 1748, and subsequently resided in Worcester County, Massachusetts, and together they had seven children wood screws added to top edge of the back; added wood screws to part of the pintel hinge; height loss.
