Thomas Skynner (American, fl 1840-1852) Pair of Portraits of William Kitteridge Cleveland and his Wife Elizabeth of Dalton, Massachusetts. Each signed "Done by T. Skynner" on the reverse of the canvas. Oil on canvas, c. 1847, depicting William Cleveland with quill pen in hand and hand resting on a letter inscribed "Dalton April 12, 1847," his wife Elizabeth depicted holding a book, both posed in ovals with dark spandrels, 30 x 24 in., in original molded giltwood frames. Condition: 1 1/2 in. tear l.r. on portrait of Elizabeth. Provenance: Family descent. Note: William Kitteridge Cleveland was born January 1, 1814 to Alvah and Hannah Kitteredge Cleveland in Dalton, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Ward Mitchell (1818-1912) on December 15 1841, and resided in Dalton, Massachusetts. Together they had three children. William died January 31, 1871.
