A. Elmer Crowell (Accord, Massachusetts 1862-1952) Bound Personal Sketchbook. Many pages signed, dated, and titled. Graphite and ink on paper, c. 1901, with sketches depicting duck hunting scenes with titles mentioning and depicting personal friends of Crowell, ducks, birds, fish, wildlife, and cartoons of humerous events, twenty-two pages with twety-five sketches, 10 x 13 1/4 in. Condition: Very good, minor toning, some sketches cut and applied to bound pages. Provenance: Direct descent from J.H. Cunningham to the present owners. Literature: The Songless Aviary: The World of A.E. Crowell & Son, a loan exhibition May 10-October 25, 1992, by Brian Cullity, Heritage Plantation of Sandwich, 1992. This book speaks of Crowell's friendship with Dr. John Charles Phillips of Beverly and Boston, Massachusetts, who brought Crowell to his hunting camp on Wenham Lake in Beverly as caretaker and gunner and worked seasonally for Phillips for ten years. Also depicted in the sketchbook are J.H. Cunningham and Doc Musgrave.
