Folk Art Carved and Painted Bird Figure, attributed to Bernier, Saco-Biddeford, Maine, c. 1900, the figure with incised delineated feathers, wire legs on carved perch with integral carved feet, (imperfections), ht. 9 1/4 in. Literature: American Folk Sculpture, by Robert Bishop, E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., New York, pp. 173 and 284. According to Robert Bishop, "Bernier was a lumberman who took up wood carving after he was injured in an accident. Only a few pieces of his are known." Small unobtrusive losses on underside of bill and tail, the perch and feet are original, the carved base below has been replaced some time ago.
