Carved Bone Games Box, early 19th century, executed by a French prisoner of war in England, the oblong box with pierced domed hinged lid, the exterior with intaglio cut borders filled with red and black sealing wax, drilled overhanging scoreboard, sliding lid opens to reveal compartment containing thirty-six bone dominoes, dice, and scoring pegs, (minor wear), ht. 2 1/2, wd. 3 1/2, lg. 8 in. Provenance: Clive Gomshall-Lloyd Collection of Napoleonic Prisoner-of-War Artifacts. The game box accompanied by the exhibition catalogue entitled The Lloyd Collection of Napoleonic Prisoner-of-War Artifacts, presented by John F. Rinaldi, exhibited June through September 1986 at the Kennebunkport Maritime Museum, Kennebunkport, Maine. The game box offered here is illustrated on p.18. Scattered areas of sealing wax losses, small repair to crack on apron.
