Mahogany Shelf Tavern Clock Attributed to J. N. Dunning, Burlington, Vermont, c. 1835, with turned, glazed and hinged bezel over the 10 in. dia. painted iron concave dial with Roman numerals, signed J. N. Dunning , hinged waist door in the form of a classical column, ogee-shaped door and base, eight-day time and strike movement with rack and snail strike, recoil escapement, two lead weights and pendulum, ht. 33 in. A related example with striking movement is found in Lester Dworetsky and Robert Dickstein, Horology Americana , p. 76. Dial repainted, case refinished, evidence of a wall hanger now gone, wall hanger area of backboard (3x1 in.) patched, waist door hinges possibly replaced, hands, pendulum, weights and dial plate appear period and original.
