British School, 19th Century Lamprey Unsigned, titled l. c., a partial label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 19 1/2 x 26 in. (49.5 x 66.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, surface grime. N.B. Lamprey was a successful racehorse, running from 1722 until 1728 (breaking for two years between 1726-1727). He was bred by Sir Matthew Pierson of Yorkshire, then sold to Thomas Panton of Newmarket, before ultimately running with Sir William Morgan. He sired two racehorses, Merry Cupid and Young Lamprie. There is extensive old retouch to the background, plus minor dashes to the horse and figure. The painting would benefit from cleaning. There is fine (and stable) craquelure.
