Washington, Bushrod (1799-1829) and Lee, Richard Henry (1732-1794), Their Copy, Smith, Robert, A Compleat System of Opticks... A Popular, a Mathematical, a Mechanical, and a Philsophical Treatise.... , [Cambridge: 1738], Volume II (of II) only, with numerous folding plates, titlepage inscribed "Richard Henry Lee" to top, with inscription "Geo. W. Washington from his Affce. Father Bushrod Washington 1831" to u.r., front pastedown also inscribed "George W. Washington to Christopher Kelly," and "Christopher Kelly to Catherine Kelly 1900," calf, 4to, (slipcases), (rebacked, scattered foxing and browning, pastedown with colored pigment covering another inscription). Note: Richard Henry Lee, proponent of American independence from Great Britain, was a one time President of the Continental Congress, the Second President Pro Tempore of the US Senate, and the great-uncle of Robert E. Lee. Bushrod Washington was George Washington's nephew, and this volume would have come to him through his second wife, the daughter of Richard Henry Lee.
