Painted Wooden Ship Model of Northwest Passage Sloop Gjöa , Dr. Norman Selverstone, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1976-77, the kit model mounted on a wooden plinth housed in a Plexiglas case, ht. 15 3/4, wd. 5 3/4, lg. 16 in. Note: This model is a replica of the sloop Gjöa , sailed by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who completed the first sea voyage through the Northwest Passage, taking three years to accomplish. The vessel left Christiana on June 16, 1903, and arrived in New York on November 6, 1906. A recent article in the New Yorker titled "Swimming in the Arctic: A Dip in the Cold," April 21, 2008, refers to this vessel, p. 52. one section of the rigging is loose from a thread attaching it from the mast.
