Herbert George (American, 20th/21st Century) Space-hold-Trisegmental #1 , 1975 Unsigned. Spruce, birch plywood, 66 3/4 x 144 x 31 in. (169.5 x 365.8 x 78.7 cm). Condition: Some warping. Provenance: Property of the Chrysler Museum of Art, sold to benefit acquisition funds. N.B. Of the present work, the artist notes that it is concerned with how to contain "a volume of space using the most simplistic means possible...that is, taking a flat plane, in this case, a sheet of 1/16th inch birch plywood, and 'folding' it." The spruce bars function as an 'exoskeleton' which contain birch plywood 'membranes' and their volumes of space. Each sheet of birch plywood is cut on the grain's diagonal, creating subtle undulations that bring a random quality to an otherwise rigid and gridded form.
