Portrait of a Girl with Long Braided Hair, possibly Boston, c. 1840, subject and date inscribed in pencil on reverse "Rebecca Boardman, Boston, Mass./This portrait painted on ivory (1840) when she was about 14 yrs. old," watercolor and gouache on ivory, depicting the girl wearing a blue and white patterned dress, coral and gold jewelry, seated on a red upholstered chair beside a table and urn of pink roses, 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 in., housed in an embossed brass frame. Condition: Paint losses on chair back and l.r. corner of table. The paint losses are on the brown wood frame of the chair and at l.r. corner about 1/2 x 1/4 in., both areas are fairly unobtrusive, also four minute stray brown specs on her left cheek and jawline area.
