William Matthew Prior (American, 1806-1873) Portrait of Frances Eudora (Dora) Taylor. Unsigned, subject identified on a note affixed to the reverse. Oil on paperboard, c. 1850, depicted wearing a red dress, green and white beaded necklace, holding a bouquet of flowers before maroon tasseled drapery, 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., in a later giltwood frame. Condition: Scattered paint losses, superfluous drips, two creases. Note: Frances Eudora Taylor, a descendant of three Mayflower pilgrims, was born August 25, 1848, the third child of four born to Benjamin Franklin Taylor, a noted musician, music teacher, and artist, and his first wife Matilda Ellis, who resided in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. Dora married George H. Barber (b. 1849) of New London, Connecticut. They had one child, Mabel Ellis.
