Federal Inlaid Mahogany Desk, coastal New Hampshire or North Shore, Massachusetts, early 19th century, the top section with two short drawers above a central hinged door enclosing compartments, and flanking hinged doors enclosing drawers and valanced compartments, set into a lower section with fold-out writing surface and case of four cockbeaded drawers bordered by interrupted line stringing and crossbanding, all on tall base with cut-out feet and valanced skirt, replaced wooden pulls, old refinish, (imperfections), ht. 55, case wd. 39 1/2, dp. 18 1/2 in. Note: Interior of lower case inscribed in chalk "R. Packard." Provenance: Moffett-Ladd House, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. minor shrinkage crack to right side lower case, shrinkage cracks to apron, cracking of veneer in hinged doors, patching to all three doors near knobs.
