George Vicat Cole (British, 1833-1893) A Surrey Cornfield Titled, signed and inscribed "... by V. Cole, London" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 31 x 46 in. (78.7 x 116.8 cm), framed. Condition: Patch reinforcement l.l., nail hole u.c., retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. George Vicat Cole was taught by his father, landscape artist, George Cole. Cole produced naturalistic landscapes of scenes throughout the British Isles. Influenced by the work of J. M. W. Turner, John Constable, and David Cox, Cole's paintings conveyed a strong sense of light and atmosphere. He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. Thin abrasion to u.l. quadrant approx. 3 3/4 in. length, small nail hole also to u.r. and u.l. corners, abrasions beneath frame liner, subtle canvas deformations. Largest area of retouch is approx. 3/4 x 1/2 in. in l.l. quadrant.
