Bates" l.l., Ferry signed and dated "David Bates 1894" l.r., labels from Mandell's Gallery, Norfolk, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 18 x 14 in. (45.7 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Both lined, retouch, light scattered abrasions. Provenance: Mandell's Gallery, Norfolk, 1969. River with thin washes of retouch to most of the sky area (approx. 1/2 of the composition), with additional scattered dots and dashes of retouch along frame liner; Ferry with scattered areas of retouch predominately to the sky area, with the largest area in the u.r. quadrant approx. 1/2 x 1 in., canvases are taut to the touch, some impasto visible.
