Wesley Elbridge Webber (American, 1841-1914) Capturing a Sperm Whale Titled, signed and dated "... Pt. By W. Webber. 1879" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 x 50 in. (76.2 x 127.0 cm), unframed. Condition: Large areas of losses throughout, tears, flaking, surface grime. Approximately six punctures/tears, with the largest in the l.r. quadrant approximately 2 1/2 in. length; the largest area of losses/flaking in the l.l. quadrant, approximately 19 x 9 in. at the extreme height and width, the work will need to be stabilized to prevent further flaking.
