Clifford Grear Alexander (American, 1870-1954) Lords of the Land , a Spring Landscape Signed "CLIFFORD GREAR ALEXANDER" l. l., identified on a period exhibition label from the Portland Society of Art, Portland, Maine, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 32 x 32 in. (81.3 x 81.3 cm), unframed. Condition: Canvas deformations, retouch, surface grime. Retouch is small scattered areas throughout in addition to larger areas in the sky u.c. Varnish inconsistencies. There is a vertical tear (approx 3 3/4 in. in length) in the l.r. corner, with some surrounding losses. Also, pinholes at edges. The work would benefit from a gentle cleaning and possibly a keying-out.
