Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) Faust, c. 1652, a later 18th century impression (Bartsch/Hollstein, 270 III/III; Hind, 260). Unsigned. Etching on paper, sheet size 8 1/4 x 6 3/8 in. (20.9 x 16.0 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Trimmed to or just within the plate mark (just into image along the top edge), toning, hinged to a supporting sheet, 3/8 inch tear near corner l.r. Provenance: Property of the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard Art Museum, sold to benefit the acquisition fund. The sheet is a laid paper without a watermark, with chain marks just over 1 inch apart, and approximately 9 laid lines per centimeter. The sheet (it is trimmed to or within the plate mark) measures 8 5/16 x 6 3/8 inches. There is a 1/4 inch tear about 1 inch above the lower right corner.
