Victorian Silver and Cut Glass Mug, Birmingham, 1867, maker's mark JB GB, cylindrical, with silver ear handle, rim and domed foot engraved with scrolling hops vines, and with "T. R. Colledge, 11th June 1868," mounted to colorless glass body cut all over with stars, star-cut base, ht. 5 1/8 in. Provenance: The Scotsman, Thomas Richardson Colledge (1796-1879), was a surgeon with the East India Company. He initiated the first infirmary for local Chinese residents in Canton, which became known as "Colledge's Opthamalic Hospital." In 1837 he founded the Medical Missionary Society of China, for which he served as President until his death. An apocryphal moment in Dr. Colledge's career is captured in a famous painting by George Chinnery, in which the doctor is treating an elderly Chinese woman. good, with minor age wear. marks good.
