Arthur Andrew (Captain) Small (American, 1885-1958) The Race for a Whale / A View of New Bedford, Massachusetts , 1933 Signed "ARTHUR SMALL" l. r., identified in a period inscription, possibly in the artist's hand, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 14 x 14 in. (35.6 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered retouch, craquelure with subtle lifting, surface grime. N.B. Arthur Small was both a sea captain and marine artist. Purportedly, the majority of his paintings were destroyed during a hurricane in 1938 while he was manning the Palmer's Island lighthouse in New Bedford. (1) This work was probably done from that vantage point. 1. Falk, Peter Hastings. Who Was Who in American Art 1564-1975 (Madison, Connecticut: Sound View Press, 1999).
