George Henry Boughton (American, 1833-1905) Skating on the Pond Signed "G. H. Boughton" l.l. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 1/4 in. (63.5 x 76.8 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, surface grime. N.B. Although Boughton was born in England, grew up in America, and then returned to England, he was most inspired by the landscape and people of Holland, and he carried the Dutch aesthetic into his paintings. Though largely self-taught, he studied with both Edouard Frere and Edouard May in Paris. Boughton enjoyed a successful career both in America and abroad; he was a member of both the National Academy in New York and the Royal Academy in London. Possible areas of light skinning.
