John Stobart (Anglo/American, b. 1929) The Thames and Hamilton House Signed "STOBART" l.r., a label from J.A. Tooth, Ltd., affixed to the reverse, identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in. (76.2 x 101.6 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, surface grime. N.B. John Stobart was raised in Leicester, England. Showing an interest in drawing at a young age, he enrolled at the Derby College of Art, and went on to study at London's Royal Academy. Influenced by the work of John Constable and Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Stobart painted with precision and clarity. He soon began to sell views of England, including images of the countryside and scenes of the Thames. After traveling to South Africa, Stobart moved to Canada in 1957. By 1965, Stobart moved to the U.S., where he enjoyed immediate success. There are areas of light skinning.
