TR Said, "That Shows How Unstable Are the Seats of ...The Mighty!" , signed "James Montgomery Flagg" l.l.; ...The Mummy...Swung His Broom, Like a Scythe, at Q's Legs, signed "James Montgomery Flagg" l.r. Ink on paper, sight size 28 3/4 x 22 1/4 in. (73 x 56.5 cm), framed. Condition: Single with water staining, tears l.l, insect damage, surface abrasions, multiple tack holes to the corners, rippling; George and Mummy with water staining, insect damage, and rippling, not examined out of frames. Provenance: From the artist to Earle Looker; by family descent, Warner, New Hampshire. N.B. The present works were illustrations for The White House Gang , an autobiography by Earle Looker, published in 1929. Looker recounts his early friendship with Theodore Roosevelt's son Quentin and their boyhood adventures in the White House. Looker is one of the four boys illustrated in Single (far right) and Mummy . Only two of the works are reproduced ( Single , frontispiece; George , p. 116), but the scene depicted in Mummy is referenced on p. 65. A copy of the book accompanies the lot.
