Silver Mounted Wood Pillar Fragment, the wood wrapped in silver band with engraved plaques engraved in German, purporting that the fragment is a piece of a pillar from a bridge built by Charlemagne taken from the Rhine, dated 1888, wd. 5 3/4 in. Inscription reads in full: Pfeiler Bruchstuck von der Brucke Karls des Gofsen bei Mainz 1881 nach taufendjahriger versenkung aus den rhein gehoben. Translation: Fragment of a pillar from a bridge built by Charlemagne raised (excavated) at Mainz in 1881, after being buried (sunk) for one thousand years. Silver band missing nails that keep it attached to wood.
