Impressive Six Piece Newell Harding & Company Coin Silver Tea and Coffee Service, Boston, c. 1860, all finely chased and embossed with fruiting grapevine, and with engraved name "Hall" to side roundel, comprising pear shaped teapot, covered sugar, milk jug, hot water jug, kettle on stand with burner, and ovoid open sugar bowl, with ear handles topped by acanthus, and lids with grape bunch finials, tiered feet, the kettle with removable filter ring for tea or coffee brewing, teapot ht. 8 1/4, kettle ht. 14 1/4 in., approx. 153 troy oz. Note: Sold to benefit a Boston non-profit institution. Examples of Newell Harding & Company works are housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, and will be represented in the forthcoming June 2007 publication Silver of the Americas, 1600-2000 , by Jeannine Falino and Gerald W.R. Ward. Provenance: This set, and the following lot, belonged to Francis Ashbury Hall (1816-1885) and his wife, Mary Ann Dowse Hall (1814-1890). Mr. Hall was an importer and wholesale hardware dealer in the Boston firm of Horton, Hall & Co. (later Hall & Macomber). Mr. Hall later established a banking firm, and was the secretary and treasurer of the Boston Lying-in Hospital. The set was passed on to Mr. and Mrs. Hall's nephew, Charles Francis Dowse (1844-1931), who was one of the founders of the Boston hardware firm of Bigelow, Dowse & Co.
