Aldro Thompson Hibbard (American, 1886-1972) Bald Mountain Brook / A Jamaica, Vermont Landscape Signed "A. T. Hibbard" faintly l.l., numbered and stamped "5X-18 / REPRODUCTION RIGHTS RESERVED" on the reverse, titled and inscribed, probably in the artist's hand, on the paper backing. Oil on canvas laid onto artist board, 18 x 24 3/4 in. (45.7 x 62.9 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: Private collection, Ohio. N.B. Massachusetts painter Aldro Thompson Hibbard had studied art in Europe before returning to Cape Cod in 1914. It was around this time that Hibbard began to travel to Vermont in the winters to paint the landscape. Hibbard had worked in a delicate impressionistic style until the challenge of working in the cold forced him to adjust his technique. Kristian Davies notes, "Broken color application may work for summer painters, but frost bite, frozen paints and winter gales that blow away canvases forced Hibbard to find quicker ways to capture the light and atmosphere of winter." (1) The result was broader brush strokes, such as the ones in the present work, which covered the canvas surface more quickly. (1) Kristian Davies. Artists of Cape Ann: A 150 Year Tradition. Rockport: Twin Lights Publishers, Inc., 2001. Pg. 102. The surface grime is unobtrusive.
