Robert Wood (American, 1889-1979) Bluebonnets Signed "Robt. Wood" l.l. Oil on canvas, 12 x 16 in. (30.4 x 40.6 cm), framed. Condition: Canvas deformation u.c., minute scattered surface losses, surface grime. N.B. Robert Wood was born in 1889 in Sandgate, England, the son of a Victorian painter, and showed promise as an artist as a child. He immigrated to the United States early in the 20th century, traveling across the country, painting and working as a laborer to support himself. He finally settled in San Antonio, Texas, where he studied with the Spanish artist Jose Arpa. It was in Texas that Wood produced some of his most well-known paintings, such as his famous scenes of blue lupine, or Texas bluebonnets, like the field pictured in this painting. There is a 1/4 inch crescent indentation with a smaller circle-shaped indentation below it. Both are located in the upper center. The former has a little loss to it. The painting might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
