Condition: Glued to cardboard backing. Provenance: Purchased from Nicole Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, April 1987, by the present owner. N.B. African-American artist Jonathan Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, and was raised along the Atlantic coast and Sea Islands, home to the Gullah. Although he trained in Chicago and has traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, his subjects constantly return to the culture of his childhood. The Gullah live an agrarian life, unified through a Creole dialect, and strong cultural traditions that evolved in Africa at the rise of the slave trade. These compositions often reflect the quiet and pace of rural life peppered with the traditions of prayer and storytelling, a strongly bound sense of family and community, and the fishing and planting that embody the Gullah culture.
