David Hockney (British, b. 1937) Excelsior 1970-75, edition of 80. Initialed "DH" l.r., numbered "38/80" l.l., identified on a label from Obelisk Gallery, Boston, affixed to the reverse. Chromogenic print, sheet size 8 1/8 x 10 5/8 in., framed. Condition: Subtle toning, fading. N.B. David Hockney did not consider himself a photographer; rather he used photographic studies to inform his paintings. He used this medium spontaneously and sporadically, often to "recall some little detail" which would then be interpreted more freely. (1) In his photographs, Hockney primarily plays with light and surface reflections. He is particularly interested in water and the visual effects and distortions it creates. (1) David Hockney.
