Jervis McEntee (American, 1828-1891) Autumn Landscape Incised "JMcE" l. l. Oil on canvas, 12 x 9 3/4 in. (30.5 x 24.8 cm), framed. Condition: Repaired/retouch area u.c., subtle craquelure. N.B. Hudson River School artist Jervis McEntee was born in Rondout, New York, and first studied with Frederick Church. McEntee's landscapes, often views of the Catskill Mountains, were mostly quiet autumn and winter scenes painted with expressive details and atmospheric spontaneity. His paintings convey a poetic and nostalgic mood; his work offered viewers an escape from the political turmoil of the Civil War and appealed to Americans' fascination with their expanding nation. Incorporating elements of Impressionism, his work presented "a vision of the national landscape saturated with nostalgia-a type of sentimentalized painted history, delivered with a dimension of emotion that seems unexpectedly pre-Modern." (1) (1) Sweeney, J. Gray. McEntee & Company November 25, 1997-January 17, 1998. Beacon Hill Fine Art, New York. There is a 1/2 inch repair with retouch to the upper center. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
