Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville (French, 1851-1941) Playful Kittens Faintly signed "Brunel Neuville" l. r., a period inscription on the reverse. Oil on panel, 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Good. N.B. Parisian-born artist Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville specialized in still lifes and scenes with playful cats and kittens, often set against a dark backdrop. The charming scenes of lively cats were perhaps linked to the Industrial Revolution which was occurring at Neuville's time; as more people moved into the cities, they began to keep domestic pets and the demand for such scenes grew.
