Painted Wooden "Upstairs to the Rare Book Department" Trade Sign, Boston, late 19th/early 20th century, (shrinkage crack), 25 x 13 in. Provenance: Oral history purports this sign came from The Old Corner Bookstore, Boston, Massachusetts. The building was built in 1712 as an apothecary shop. In the mid-1800s it became Ticknor and Fields Publishing House. They published the great American writers of that period including Hawthorne, Longfellow, Emerson, Thoreau, and others. Many famous books were published here, including The Scarlet Letter, Walden, and the Atlantic Monthly magazine. The bookstore closed sometime before 1960. vertical shrinkage crack, paint wear to molding.
