William Pierce Stubbs (American, 1842-1909) Brig at Sea. Signed "Stubbs" l.l. Oil on canvas, 13 3/4 x 20 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Small tear l.c., surface grime. Provenance: This painting was originally owned by Mr. Armory Coolidge of Boston, and once hung in the interior of the schooner yacht Blue Dolphin , which was acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1942 from Mr. Coolidge, and was in service at the Section Base, Boston, Massachusetts, on April 6, 1942. Blue Dolphin spent the next 38 months serving as station vessel at Casco Bay, Casco Bay, Maine, and later was involved in oceanographic research in conjunction with various universities, civilian research organizations, and the Office of Naval Research. She was also authorized to fly the Naval Reserve Yacht pennant. (A copy of a photo of the painting hanging in the interior of the Blue Dolphin accompanies the painting). The painting was given by Armory Coolidge to Mr. Roger Griswold of the firm Griswold and Gulick Architects on Newbury Street in Boston, and then to his son, also named Roger Griswold. tear is about 5/8 in. lg. with a piece of tape on back.
