Anglo School, 19th Century Portrait of Agnes and Isabella Simmonds and their Pet Cat. Unsigned, the subjects, artist, and date identified in inscriptions affixed to the reverse, depicting the daughters of George Simmonds of Weydon Mill, Farnham, Surrey, painted by James May of Scotland, about 1859. Oil on canvas, 18 x 15 1/8 in., in a later grain-painted wooden frame. Condition: Scattered paint losses with retouch. Note: Several families by the name of Simmonds were operating mills in the Farnham, Surrey, areas of England in the early to mid-19th century. scattered paint losses primarily to background, the largest spot is about 1 1/2 x 1 in. just to rt. of urn, several small spots on faces and clothing.
