American School, Early 19th Century Allegorical Picture of a Shepherdess in a Landscape Titled "Armenia. " Signed "N. Lewis" l.r. (hidden by eglomise mat), and inscribed in gilt lettering on eglomise mat l.r., inscribed title "Armenia" below (hidden by eglomise mat). Watercolor on paper, depicting a shepherdess seated beside a tree on which she is inscribing the word "Tancre," a river with various sailing and steam vessels runs behind, the two sheep beside her are textured with stippling, 12 3/4 x 13 1/4 in., in original painted and gilded eglomise mat and molded giltwood frame. Condition: Crease, toning, paper repairs, repairs to eglomise mat. Note: A label on the reverse panel reads: "Exhibited at Connecticut Tercentenary and Bristol Sesquicentennial Celebration/June 10-15, 1935/owner Ellen Peck." vertical crease right of center, flakes of original eglomise still affixed to borders of work, but hidden by mat, ten small conservation stablization repairs to paper with rice paper reinforcement around edges, most are not seen from front and hidden by eglomise mat; eglomise mat- vertical crack located left of center was professionally repaired and is fairly unobtrusive, spots of black paint and gilding have been redone.
