Needlework Sampler, Elizabeth Jewett, Hollis, New Hampshire, worked in silk threads on a linen ground with rows of alphabets over a pious verse: "Virtue's the chiefest beauty of the mind. /The noblest ornament of human kind./ Then place the standard of fair virtue high./Pursue and grasp it een beyond the sky.;" signed "Elizabeth Jewett, Holles (sic)", above a horizontal band with a rose blossom and floral sprigs, enclosed in sawtooth and geometric carnation floral borders, (thread losses on edge of border), 22 x 22 in., in a contemporary burl veneer frame. Note: Elizabeth Jewett was the daughter of Captain Nathaniel Jewett and Mary Davis Jewett. She was born in Hollis, New Hampshire, on August 25, 1829. Her parents were also born in Hollis, New Hampshire, in 1803 and 1807. Elizabeth married Levi Winters Barton of Croydon, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on August 25, 1852, and together were the parents of seven children. Elizabeth Jewett died May 19, 1912, in Newport, New Hampshire, and her husband Levi died March 10, 1899, also in Newport. Numerous thread losses green sawtooth border on frame border, no other losses detected, professionally and conservatively framed with a spacer.
