American School, 19th Century Portrait of Young Charlotte Ann Robbins Seated in a Windsor Chair. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1842, showing the child seated in a red paint decorated Windsor chair, holding a spoon, 28 x 22 in., in a contemporary molded giltwood frame. Condition: Laid down onto a panel, scattered retouch primarily to background. Provenance: By family descent. Note: Charlotte Ann Robbins was born on June 19, 1840, in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of John Robbins (b. August 3, 1811, in Lexington, Massachusetts) and Susan Allen Simonds (b. April 1, 1819, in Hillsboro, New Hampshire). Charlotte married Joseph J. Knox (b. 1839 in New Hampshire) on September 1, 1862. The 1880 United States census lists the family living in Woburn, Massachusetts, and Joseph's occupation as a carpenter. They had a child, Lottie Lillian, b. November 8, 1862. Laid down onto a cardboard panel, some retouch mainly to background, but soome areas in her hair and spots on her dress, retouch could be more extensive but hard to tell with masking varnish, there possibly was a tear and on her left facing cheek which now shows about a 3 in. line.
